So, what is meditation?
Many people have an incomplete picture of what meditation is, can be, or may have tried or given up – personally, I know I have been caught in most of those scenarios over the years! A common misconception of meditation is that it is about sitting on the floor with your eyes closed, legs crossed and trying to focus on thoughts or breath. People often try to free their mind of everything and ignore the sounds around them, using breath counting or sound. Inevitably, this is extremely challenging in this world when most of us are thinking a myriad of things at once about dinner plans, work, children etc, and so they simply give up.
However, one of the most important goals of any meditation regime is to be free of thoughts that provide limitations. Easy to say. However, even when initial stages start by drawing focus and attention towards certain intentions, by deepening the practice, it may provide new awareness and insights. By subsequently transforming these insights into our way of being as well as our actions, the focused attention potentially yields a greater awareness and understanding of our ‘human’ lives and relationships.
A good friend of mine often says that when things get tricky or confusing, just to simply ‘take it to the land’. In following her advice, I have often found that spirit speaks through and provides solace within the grounding space that nature provides.
